His spell can only be broken by true love. Until that happens, the girls can only be in human form from midnight until dawn. Siegfried, the young Prince is hunting in the forest with his companions. He takes aim at a graceful swan, just as the clock is striking midnight and he sees Odette the swan regaining her human form. They fall in love in a trice. Odile, the magician’s daughter, observes this blossoming love affair with jealousy. Dawn approaches: Odette and Siegfried must bid farewell to each other. Odile asks her father for help: she wants to be allowed to take on Odette’s form, this way she can win the love of the Prince for herself. Rothbart agrees to his daughter’s request. The next day, potential brides are sent to Siegfried but his heart is now committed to Odette. Suddenly Odile enters in the form of Odette and Siegfried happily embraces her. The true Odette appears and seeing Siegfried’s infidelity flees in bitter disappointment. Siegfried is astounded by this trickery and follows his love down to the lake. Rothbart also sets off in pursuit to prevent the lovers from meeting but the swans unite against him. Siegfried swears eternal love to Odette and this breaks Rothbart’s magic spell. The other swans too regain their human form.
