Béla Bartók’s orchestra work Dance Suite was composed in 1923 for a famous concert celebrating the Fiftieth Anniversary of the unification of Pest, Buda and Óbuda. “Hearing the work, we encounter dance melodies which exude the pure, unmistakable air of folk music. We should know that without exception, all of these melodies are the composer’s own invention which he was only able to achieve because Bartók had delved so deeply into folk songs that he knew them from within,” wrote the distinguished music scholar János Kárpáti. “I don't reject any influence, be it Slovakian, Roumanian, Arabic or from any other source. The source must only be clean, fresh and healthy!” Béla Bartók “Bartók’s composition, The Miraculous Mandarin inspires most Hungarian and European artists to create their own version. Choreographers and directors are all urged to deal with this work. I have been dealing with it for years, thinking about what the story means to me. For me, I am not particularly interested by the Eastern man, the prostitute and the relationship of the thugs. I am exploring the inner tales of a stormy love and the summoning of elemental desires which are capable of drawing such power from people they can become capable of destroying the world around them and transcending the barriers of reality. In other words, to be the Mandarin is a state of mind. It can happen to anyone who achieves this level of desire and love when the laws of the outside world cease to function. Their lives can only follow the rules dictated by inner sexual imperatives. In this way, the Thugs represent the outside world, the Girl the object of desire while the Mandarin is the embodiment of DESIRE”. Tamás Juronics
