In the story of Béla Balázs, the love of the two young people can realise only at the expense of a serious struggle. Through the enchantment of the Fairy, their path is obstructed by the forces of Nature so as to keep them apart until they become free from the false formalities, the ones which hide their true values. This moral story, in which the purest ideal love can be reached by looking painfully deep into ourselves, is elevated to a philosophical level by the music of Béla Bartók. Orpheus... is one of the most complex mythological heroes who could manipulate the order of Nature with his lyre. He could also charm the guards of the nether world and travel there to find his love, Eurydice. However, he couldn’t fulfil the conditions on which he could have brought back his beloved woman to the living; after all he failed not to look at his woman on their way up. Was he unsure whether Eurydice was following him? Or was he impatient because of desire? What manly virtue did the famous lutist lack? The ballet music of Stravinsky makes the artist’s journey to hell come alive on an ethereal note.
