“The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.” (Edmond Burke) “This production only relates to the great historic ballets of the past and one of the greatest slave rebellions in world history through the principal character. The choreography was created not for Khachaturian’s well-known music, but for a new and modern composition by Richárd Riederauer. In Spartacus 2076, the choreography deals with Spartacus’s superhuman struggles and desires. I reject violence ...and all that is happening on the streets these days. My Spartacus wishes to address humanity on a much higher plane of thought. Spartacus with his unbelievably charismatic personality was able to influence thousands. He believed in the possibilities for changing life, he believed in freedom and knew what is good to fight for. He believed in himself and his friends, and in love. He did not want to murder but to change the world. I would like audiences, witnessing the purity of his desires and his elemental power, to believe that our own lives could be different and better, that it depends on us and on what we do for it. The battle for good is always a greater struggle. You must think long term but it pays dividends. And why 2076? Above all I wanted to remove the figure of Spartacus from history, by the same token, 2076 may be distant but for today’s youngsters it is not something unimaginable. And in the apocalyptic vision of 2076, the presence of evil can be much more threatening for today’s audience, making Spartacus’s battle all the more powerful. If his spirit can just ignite something in our hearts, then it has meaning because there is hope that the vision will never become reality.” Balázs Vincze Further performance: Festival Theatre March 5, 19.00
