The opening and the second evening performance of Dance Forum No. 8 will be given by the dance company which the New York Times described as “startlingly imaginative” and which approaches movements and the human body from new perspectives for the audience. The artistic director of the company is the Chinese born Shen Wei who is not just a choreographer but also dancer, painter and designer and he creates his own sets and costumes for his choreographies. Rite of Spring dates from 2002 and is a c...onversation between movement, music and visual images. It is performed by twelve dancers and set to the four-hand piano version of Stravinsky’s ballet The Rite of Spring recorded by Fazil Say. A seamless landscape of blacks, whites and greys stretches across the full depth and width of the stage. Atop this abstract mural, the dancers’ movements are keyed to musical phrases and rhythms that propel them from place to place, saturating the work like paint on canvas. Shen makes visible the energy behind each choreographic structure, just as trails of paint make evident the process and then becomes the stuff of the painting itself. Folding is danced before a blow up of a painting by the 18th century Chinese artist Ba Da Shan Ren, to music by John Tavener and Tibetan Buddhist chants. The choreography was originally prepared for the Guangdong Modern Dance Company and it received its world première in 2000. The work presents encounters between traditional and futuristic, between East and West. Shen Wei conjures up a unique world for us, a non existing surreal world between dance and performance art. The dancers wear surreal costumes, painted white, they move very slowly, taking up statuesque poses, re-creating themselves over and over in this mystical world.
