After their highly successful debut in 2008, the world-renowned New York-based dance company Shen Wei Dance Arts appears again in Hungary as the star guest of the Budapest Dance Festival. Chinese-born Shen Wei is not only the company’s artistic director and choreographer, but a dancer, painter and designer as well. His work has been described by the New York Times as both “extraordinarily creative” and “breath-takingly spectacular.” Known by millions for his choreography of the opening ceremony... of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, Shen Wei is today considered one of the most outstanding creative talents on the international dance scene. Through the masterful dance and photography of Shen Wei, the three-part series Re- (I, II, III) takes the audience on a journey to three of the world’s mysterious and wonderful places – Tibet, Cambodia and China. In analyzing himself and the world around him, the choreographer uses the prefix “re-“ to invoke the words “recreation,” “recultivation,” “relation” and “regeneration” in relation to his work. “My inspiration for the work came in 2006, when I visited Angkor Wat in Cambodia. You can sense in it the impressions which the temples, trees, sounds of nature, children and local culture made on me. I made recordings of the sounds of the primeval forest that surrounds the temples so that I could use them in this work, and I chose traditional music to accompany it performed by disabled musicians – the Moon Light Band – on handmade instruments under the trees near Angkor Thom.” (Shen Wei) Presented by the National Dance Theatre
