Music: Sergei Prokofiev Sets and Costume: Jérôme Kaplan Choreography: Xin Peng Wang The director of the hundred year old ballet company of the Theatre Dortmund in the 1980s was Youri Vámos. He was of Hungarian decent and he made the ensemble really famous and popular. Since 2003, the post of ballet director has been occupied by choreographer Xin Pen Wang, who was born in China where he also studied. He has successfully exploited every aspect of expressive dance form – from modern pieces to na...rrative style grand ballet. His very first Dortmund choreographies attracted much attention in Germany, particularly his Swan Lake which performed to full houses for several years and it was celebrated as the “Dortmund ballet marvel”. Xin Peng Wang had long wanted to create choreography to Prokofiev’s music and in October 2007, he premièred his work Romeo and Juliet that was greeted with a storm of applause by the audience while critics described the production as the culmination of his work to date. In 1934, Sergei Prokofiev, a member of the new music avant-garde, returned to the country of his birth, following many years abroad. In the Soviet Union, artistic trends were at that time already determined by state decree and did not favour modern art and the composer found himself facing a serious dilemma: how to work while being obliged to follow socialist cultural doctrines. It is no surprise given this conflict between politics and individualism that he should chose to work on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet: in it, for those who had eyes and ears to see, two hostile clans fall victim to a conflict of interests that has been festering for years. For Xin Peng Wang the Prokofiev ballet was the starting point to explore this theme again and again. Dream and caprice offer the hope that ossified structure and traditions can be broken down.
