The Nederlands Dans Theater 2 is one of the world's leading contemporary dance theatres, with choreographer Paul Lightfoot serving as its artistic director. Based in The Hague, the company performs before several hundred thousand viewers each year in Europe, the United States, Asia and Australia.
The piece Sad Case, one of the high points in the lifetime output of the choreography duo of Lightfoot and Sol León, dates back to 1998, when León was seven months pregnant with her daughter. The ...movements set to Mexican mambo music continuously strikes a balance between satirical and classical dance.
Handman invites the audience on a pleasant journey down a thus far undiscovered path, where there ensue many brief encounters between men and women, women and women, men and men, as well between people and the Handman. The title refers to a certain moment in the piece, one that might even escape the viewer's notice.
Alexander Ekman says he is obsessed with rhythm. His choreography, set exclusively to classical music, yielded a reinterpretation of Schubert's Death and the Maiden string quartet, with the dancers truly becoming instruments themselves alongside the chamber musicians. In the way he employed and directed the dancers, Ekman sought to point out to the audience the importance of artistic receptiveness.
