The Cloud Gate Dance Theatre was founded in Taiwan in 1973 and was the first contemporary dance company in the Chinese speaking world. Led by the internationally renowned choreographer Lin Hwai-Min it shapes the beauties of ancient traditions into a modern and exciting celebration of movement. The chief dance critic of the New York Times, Anna Kisselgoff described their work Moon Water as being the best dance performance of 2003. Since its world première in 1998, it has been performed at numerou...s festivals and theatres, to tremendous acclaim. For the Chinese, shui yuei, or Moon Water symbolises two things. It is put into words by the following wise Buddhist saying: “Flowers in a mirror and the moon on the water are both illusory”. The other characterises the state, which those practising Tai Chi aim for: “Energy flows as water, while the spirit shines as the moon”. The choreographer Lin Hwai-Min treats these famous quotations as the basis for his work and using them expresses Taoist philosophy in the language of art. The performance is a study, which weighs up questions of reality and the unreal, of tension and relaxation, of yin and yang, as well as questions of time.
