The French Canadian La La La Human Steps company, performing in Hungary for the first time, was founded by its choreographer, the world famous Édouard Lock who has been creatively involved in dance art since 1980. Known for his productions which break down recognised forms, his most recent work entitled Amjad was premiered by the Quebec based ensemble in April this year. He was inspired by such well known works of Romanticism as Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty and he brings tradition and modernity... under a single umbrella by reconceiving and reinterpreting them. These works have been “deconstructed” and “reassembled,” adapting their messages to modern choreography and music. In Lock’s new work, he is continuing his adventure in rediscovering the body as an extreme and abstract entity. “His objective is the liberation of the body from every functionality to the point of abstraction as romantic ballet does” , wrote the French Libération. To perform Amjad La La La Human Steps has assembled a team which comprises ballet dancers who are highly experienced in contemporary techniques, among them Andrea Boardman, who for ten years was the leading dancer of the Grand Ballets Canadiens, and Xuan Cheng who won the 2004 Shanghai International Ballet Contest. Both are now members of the La La La company. Gavin Bryars has reinterpreted the original Tchaikovsky works and adapted them for performance by a live chamber orchestra. In some parts of the compositions, experimental electronic instruments designed by Blake Hargreaves can be heard. The sets are the work of world famous contemporary Canadian sculptor Armand Vaillancourt.
