Every culture preserves its own spirit, but at an elemental level also holds the legacy of universal human culture. Part of this legacy is acceptance and solidarity, placing coexisting peoples next to each other and not in a hierarchy. "Those who are able to love what is theirs are free, and without any convulsion, insatiable hunger or thirst for possession,” wrote the poet János Pilinszky.
For the first time in the history of Hungarian folk dance theatre, the new production entitled Tran...scarpathia Invoked - Thence and over the Passes showcases, in the form of an anthology, the colourful and rich traditional culture of the peoples living in the Eastern Carpathians and Transcarpathia: Hungarians, Ukrainians, Ruthenians, Hutsuls, Romanians, Gypsies and Jews. It presents all that is shared in these peoples' folklore, as well as all that is specific to each. The emphasis however, is on common roots, and on vividly revealing the natural similarities derived from a shared historical past. (The Ruthenian peoples who preserve the memory of Francis II Rákóczi to this day are proud of their forefathers who fought together with the Hungarians, defending the castles of the noble Transylvanian prince.) Passing on traditions and getting to know the folklore idioms of our own people and those living with us offers opportunities for new encounters and for us to reveal ourselves. Theatre provides a medium and a mirror for these encounters. A mirror that is a pleasure to look into, reflecting on both the creative artists and those in the audience who can share in the experience of acceptance and solidarity.
Archive images appearing during the performance are taken from the photographic collection of the Hungarian Museum of Ethnography.
