As related in this story set 500 years ago, the events in the life of György Dózsa represented a turning-point in Hungarian history. The tragic consequences of the peasant revolt led by Dózsa had an influence on the fate of the Hungarian people that still resonates to this day. "It was a long time ago, beyond my words… when courage still walked the roads," so goes the song by Tamás Szarka (of the Ghymes band). In the role of the tragic, besotted hero, Péter Novák displays the full range of his ...talents, which combine the versatile skills of a singing actor with a thorough knowledge of Hungarian folk dance. To a soundtrack of folk music selected by Péter Makó (of the Csík Ensemble), the artists of the Honvéd Dance Theatre recount the life of the legendary peasant leader from his glory to his downfall to the ugly reprisals which followed, the brutality of which horrified even a Europe already accustomed to war and bloodshed. Despite the grim tale told by history, Zoltán Zsuráfszky has conjured up a vivacious, spectacular and highly entertaining dance and music show. Citing the spiritual influence on the piece’s dramaturgy exerted by the poetry of István Sinka and Gyula Juhász and the writings of Gyula Illyés and István Nemeskürty, the director and choreographer has created a new kind of national dance theatre production.
