We can analyse the world in a diversity of ways. We can pick it to pieces and examine each slice separately, or pile together matching pieces to obtain a more complete picture of people and eras. We can listen to folk music in its own right, we can watch a dance house, or explore a museum, and in this way, pile the impressions together in our memory like tiles of a mosaic. The situation is radically changed if we want to obtain a unified and more complete image, naturally relying to some degree on our imagination and then offer it to others. This programme shows a section of the path traversed by the creators who followed in the footsteps of Béla Bartók and Zoltán Kodály. They visited the area now in Slovakia where the two ethnographers/composers began collecting folk music and folk songs a hundred years ago irrespective of whether these melodies were sung by Hungarians or Slovaks. The ensembles perform music and dances which were not unknown or alien to those living in a region or one homeland, since a Slovak “turning” dance said more to people in Gömör than a Kalotaszeg Hungarian lad’s dance since local Hungarians had also danced it previously. On their collecting trips, Bartók and Kodály saw similar dances. We also obtain an interesting and exciting sketch of people’s lifestyle and habits from their letters and from those of the poet Sándor Petőfi. This performance is constructed from these mosaic tiles.
