Given the openness and freedom of interpretation of his works, Shakespeare has always been a challenge and an inspiration for theatre and film directors, composers and choreographers. The open and archaic structure of Shakespeare plays makes them ideally suited for reflecting any historical or political situation. This Hamlet is a personal interpretation of William Shakespeare’s play. At a safe distance from the scheming of high politics, we follow young Hamlet in his inner struggle to preserve... the sanctity of his father’s memory. Hamlet lives and acts in a land between dream and reality, past and present, facts and imagination. It is from a suppressed Eastern Europe of the 1950’s that we follow his search for the truth about his father’s fate and the real meaning of the relationship between his mother Gertrude and his father during their immaculate and loving marriage. The struggle for freedom is shown through the story of a family. Hamlet is obsessed by searching the past, his thoughts are focused entirely on Gertrude’s betrayal and Claudius’s duplicity. He is therefore incapable of seeing and loving Ophelia as she really is. The ballet troupe serves as a chorus acting out Hamlet’s thoughts and feelings. As the story progresses, these thoughts and feelings take on an increasingly independent life and at one point turn their back on Hamlet. This Hamlet is a ballet on the fear of the unknown, the need for security, on ideals, and the absolute knowledge of the good and the bad.
