“Giselle which was premièred in 1841, is probably the only romantic ballet which is still being performed on the world’s premiere stages. Its theme comes from the German Middle Ages: the Willis are the spirits of women jilted before their wedding day who come back to seek revenge on men by dancing them to death. At midnight, they arise from their graves and hover in the moonlight and at cross roads, waiting for young men, who they seduce into dance and proceed to destroy them! Looking at it no...w, it is something that Stephen King could have written. The explanation for this is that the citizens of the day felt rather like theatre goers today. Earning a living all day, they yearn for something which religion and enlightenment both despised and suppressed: superstitions and the world of magic. “Everything that was secret, distant and otherworldly entered an intimate and fecund relationship with the ballet” said Théophile Gautier. Secretive spirits of sky, earth, wire and water, underground gnomes, kobolds, airey fairies and will-o’-the-whisps, fire salamanders, spirits of the rivers, evil witches of darkness, bat winged sorcerers and demons, who live only at night or in some distant hinterland and tempt humans to their doom are also waiting to be brought to life on the ballet stage. Giselle performed by the Pécs Ballet will naturally be addressing twenty first century man. Adam Adolphe’s music will be heard according to the demand of modern ears, arranged by Richárd Riederauer. And this story will be closer to mankind of today, who also craves something in the theatre that they don’t find during the week.” György Böhm, dramaturg The performance has been made possible with support from the National Cultural Fund.
