In Dance Variations, The Duna Art Ensemble will perform its two outstanding productions of recent years in a single evening. Barocco Rustico and The Golden Bough are characterised by folk music and dance transferred to the modern day, with both productions effectively combining authentic folk culture with modern stage interpretations. The creators and performers of this double bill have no interest in maintaining what they consider to be “dead” traditions, instead focusing on continuing the cons...tantly evolving cultural movements of today. Inspired by the work of Vivaldi, the music of Barocco Rustico is interwoven with elements of The Four Seasons and the folk music of Transylvania, which is in turn heavily influenced by the baroque movement. This musical style, sometimes referred to as “peasant baroque”, was elevated to the courts of Europe by Vivaldi, while Fabio Biondi's interpretation of The Four Seasons gives the piece a raw power, dynamism and puritanism comparable to the feel and energy of folk music. The Duna Art Ensemble's performances not only find a balance between folk and baroque music, and between Hungarian folk dance and the baroque era, but also establishes an inextricable link from past to present, from tradition to experimentation, and from authentic folk dance to choreographies reflecting the permanent desire of the artist to create. The golden bough of legend originally had a magical power that could only be harnessed by an ability to regenerate through constant struggle and sacrifice. As with the musical world of Bartók, the same applies to the traditions of folk music: Its immortality does not derive of itself, but from us. It is our finite existence that feeds its longevity, allowing us to question ourselves time and time again. If we do so with the requisite humility and genuine dedication, we will be rewarded with immediate answers. Presented by: National Dance Theatre
