When dancer and choreographer Pál Frenák returned to Hungary in 1999 to establish his Franco-Hungarian dance company, he caused an immediate sensation on the local dance scene. With his novel approach to movement and deep attachment to forms of expression that go beyond the verbal, coupled with innovative technical methods, he has had a defining impact on the evolution of contemporary dance. His performances are constructed of diverse elements of movement and inspired by human relationships, by ...humanity and its surroundings. These relationships often engender the tensest situations and the widest range of variations. Frenák’s works are no mere snapshots representing fleeting emotions, but raise far-reaching questions which he explores by means of a highly visual approach that throws open the gates of the imagination. In the piece entitled Seven, presented to mark the tenth anniversary of Compagnie Pál Frenák’s foundation, the choreographer looks at what it means to be an expatriate, exploring how individuals break from their own culture and integrate into a foreign environment. He questions the necessity of redefining individuality and national identity, and whether such a transformation is at all possible. The process of breaking free and integrating is presented as a kind of abstract, corporal metamorphosis. The choreography enhances abstracted movement in a way that treats the entire three-dimensional space as a “danceable” spatial geometry, which can be modified by the simple process of rearranging the scene. Using contemporary elements of fine art, it ventures to the extreme limits of physical performance, stretching the boundary between the possible and the impossible. Seven is a vision of a world where the border between dreams and reality becomes blurred. Rather than seeking answers, it throws light on how cultures and societies in the modern age relate to the individuals who created them and live within them. Presented by the National Dance Theatre
