Featuring: Honvéd Dance Theatre and Orchestra, artistic director: Zoltán Zsuráfszky Script: Zsuzsa Vincze Artistic and dramaturgic assistant: Ferenc Novák Music: Ferenc Sebő Song lyrics: Péter Novák Director-choreographer: Zoltán Zsuráfszky The Captain of Tenkes, a historical drama serial set in the 18th century (screenplay: Ferenc Örsi; music: Tihamér Vujicsics; director: Tamás Fejér), was a landmark in the history of Hungarian television. Filmed in black and white, it was the first seri...al to be broadcast by Hungarian State Television and enjoyed huge popularity at the time, as viewers followed it with an unprecedented enthusiasm from one week to the next. To create a musical dance production – based on the film – was a long-held dream of Ferenc Novák, the former, and Zoltán Zsuráfszky the present artistic director of the Honvéd Dance Theatre. The production is set in the time of the Hungarian uprising against the Austrian Habsburgs. Although the main character Máté Eke, soldier of the Kuruts brigadier Ádám Balog, is a made-up figure, he is nevertheless a composite of several actual historical figures. The story gives a fairy tale-like and often humorous account the Hungarian freedom fighters who, despite often being outnumbered and outgunned, use their native Hungarian cunning and ingenuity to get the better of the bumbling Austrian forces. To create an authentic historical setting, the stage adaptation of the original screenplay – while retaining the most important and entertaining episodes of the TV series – invokes the sayings, beliefs and legendary figures of the Hungarian people of the era, in the hope that by doing so, and through our folk-dancing traditions, today\'s audience will be brought closer to the historical customs of our nation, helping them to identify with the heroes of the age, while being entertained by a thoroughly enjoyable production, full of excellent dancing.
