Swans appear countless times in the myths, legends, folk stories and literature of various cultures. A rich symbolism has grown around the birds, which usually symbolise freedom, love and loyalty. This contemporary, re-conceived version of the great classic speaks to the present and the people of today. Besides presenting the story based on the old Russian folk tale, this version also depicts an ecological drama built around the central theme of environmental degradation. Soaring high abov...e the human world, they see the destruction of civilisation and nature. At the same time, the accursed shape-shifting women are compelled to live as swans by day and humans by night. The piece does not take a stance in the struggle between good and evil, since these two poles grapple with each other in the characters themselves. Freedom and the yearning for purity both appear juxtaposed against the hopelessness of attaining either. (Yvette Bozsik)
The performance is recommended for those aged 14 and older.
