Live broadcast with English and Hungarian subtitle. William Kentridge’s dazzlingly innovative production returns to the New York Met for the first time since its sold-out première in 2010. First staged in 1930 when Shostakovich was still only 22, this bizarre but brilliant comedy was only performed for a few years after its initial appearance and would have to wait another 40 years to be rediscovered, since when it has remained a regular fixture on the opera repertoire. The performance will b...e conducted by Pavel Smelkov who made his debut at the Met aged only a little older than the composer was when he wrote The Nose with this very same work as part of a hugely successful series of performances in 2010. His cooperation with the New York opera house continued the following season with Boris Godunov. In this Shostakovich work telling the peculiar story of a hapless state official and his runaway nose, the part of the nose’s owner is sung by Paulo Szot, who debuted on Broadway in 2008 and immediately won a Tony Award for best actor in a musical. Born to Polish parents in Brazil, the baritone debuted at the Met in the première of The Nose before returning later as Escamillo alongside Roberto Alagna, and then in the role of Lescaut as the partner of Anna Netrebko. Taking the stage as the police inspector is Andrei Popov, a member of the Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg since 2007, who was also seen by the New York audience in the Smelkov-conducted production of Boris Godunov. The title role is played by Australian tenor Alexander Lewis, who had the opportunity to work for years with some of the greatest names in the genre within the opera development programme for young artists created by Music Director James Levine, thus gaining his “passport” to the world’s most famous opera stages.
