Live broadcast with English and Hungarian subtitle. In the title role, Patricia Racette is one of America’s leading sopranos and a winner of the Richard Tucker Award, just a few years after New York’s most famous diva Renée Fleming received the same accolade. She has performed regularly at the Metropolitan since 1995 – making her debut in another Puccini role, that of Musetta in La Bohème – and is also frequently invited to appear as a soloist in concert with top American orchestras. Her repe...rtoire focuses on Verdi and Puccini, so much so that she is one of the most in-demand sopranos across the Atlantic works from the two great Italian opera composers are on the programme. In the role of Tosca’s lover Cavaradossi is Roberto Alagna, whose performance has been praised by critics for its blend of power and lyricism. Born in France to Sicilian parents, this tenor with Italian opera running through his veins has been an audience favourite for two decades and a regular performer at the Metropolitan Opera since the mid-1990s. Scarpia is sung by George Gagnidze, whom the local audience has already had the chance to admire in 2013 on the stage of the Hungarian State Opera in the title role of Rigoletto at the Budapest Spring Festival. Taking the podium on this occasion for one of the most frequently performed works in the opera repertoire is the young Italian conductor Riccardo Frizza, a fixture of the most prestigious opera houses. Although many in the audience greeted the director of this production of Tosca with boos at its première at the Met, it has gone on to become one of the most popular and spectacular interpretations of the work. James Levine, the Met’s legendary music director, has likened the sensations the viewer experiences from the Swiss Luc Bondy’s production to the excitement of a Hitchcock film.
