On the recommendation of the Hungarian Unesco Commission, 2011 has been declared international year of the composer Franz Liszt. The Szeged Contemporary Ballet celebrates the 200th anniversary of Liszt’s birth with a new ballet. Klára Hamburger writes the following about the musical material: “Dante’s work – the Divine Comedy – was one of the essential literary experiences of the Romantic generation of artists. Franz Liszt became acquainted with the work in Italy in the 1830s. On 2 June 1855, he... wrote to Wagner, then living in exile in Zurich: ‘So you are reading Dante. That is good company for you. For a long time I have been thinking of a Dante symphony in three movements: Inferno, Purgatorio and Paradiso – the first two for orchestra only, the last with a choir. If I come to visit you in autumn, I can probably bring it with me, and if you don’t think it is bad then, with your permission, I will dedicate it to you.’ In reply to the letter, Wagner immediately dissuaded Liszt from composing Paradiso and from using a choir. Liszt partly accepted his advice, given that the work has only two movements. But instead of Paradiso, he wrote a Magnificat, a Latin hymn glorifying God for female choir, to be attached to Purgatorio. The title of the first movement is Inferno. Liszt had an extraordinary and brilliant sense for visions of hell, and for the musical expression of satanic irony. His danse macabres and Mephisto portraits remained his most magnificent creations until his death. And his highly dramatic Inferno based on the work of Dante belongs among these.” Presented by the National Dance Theatre
