Péter Esterházy appears for the first time on stage at the Palace of Arts! In truth this is all that needs to be said in heralding an evening that many have longed for and urged, since it is a genuinely rare occasion for celebration when the Literarium series of contemporary literary evenings has the chance to welcome such a world-renowned writer. In his position on the international vanguard, Esterházy is at least as popular abroad as he is at home in Hungary. His hugely influential, ines...capable and epoch-making body of work demands a separate chapter in every reference guide to the history of literature, and yet - despite the library of scholarly writings about him - each successive book creates new challenges and intellectual adventures and throws up unexpected surprises to captivate literary contemporaries and readers alike. This magical, pulsating vivacity and continuing capacity for reinvention derives from the writer's open, endlessly curious dialogical outlook and attitude, which avoids the outmoded posturing of living legends and on which basis he is ranked by commentators in the international cultural sphere among the opinion-shaping citizens of Europe.
Although they are not necessarily prerequisites for writers, Esterházy's incisive intelligence and erudition, captivating wit, inherent lack of affectation, and refined, artistic sense of humour make him a wonderful presence on stage. His charming personality - even after countless public appearances - never fails to disarm and delight audiences. A certainty to make the evening unforgettable on the musical plane, Esterházy will be joined by the Budapest Festival Orchestra New Music Ensemble, with which he enjoys a many-faceted association. It is advisable to get hold of tickets well in advance for this unrepeatable, one-off occasion.
