Swiss-born Emmanuel Pahud is one of the greatest flute players alive today. At the age of just 22, he became principal flautist of the Berlin Philharmonic, but he is also active as a soloist and chamber musician, giving some 160 concerts annually and gladly venturing into genres beyond classical music. In describing himself as a chameleon, Pahud alludes to a versatility that is celebrated and admired the world over: with his 14-carat gold flute in hand, he always tries to match the colours... and timbre of the musical style he is playing at any given time. In playing Khachaturian's concerto, he will need this ability to change colours for what is an extraordinarily varied, emotionally rich work, originally written for violin in 1940 for the then youthful titan David Oistrakh. Abounding in robust rhythms and exotic melodies, the work has become one of the most popular concertos of the 20th century, and has often been performed on flute since its transcription for the instrument by Jean-Pierre Rampal in 1968.
The concert opens with a sweeping overture that is perhaps the most frequently performed work by Mikhail Glinka, father of the Russian national musical style. The second half of the evening features another famous piece of the Slavic repertoire, a sumptuous masterpiece by Dvořák that displays the composer's inexhaustible melodic invention.
