György Selmeczi is 60 years old. The Kolozsvár-born composer, conductor, pianist, opera director and university lecturer is an exceptionally multi-faceted individual. His music is known to many who do not even realise it, as he is responsible for the scores of Hungarian films such as Angi Vera, Kettévált mennyezet, Megáll az idő, Szirmok, virágok, koszorúk, Tiszta Amerika, Idő van and – to mention some more recent works – Jadviga’s Pillow and Dallas Pashamende. In all, he has composed music for some 50 Hungarian feature films, as well as numerous theatrical productions.
Selmeczi established the New Music Workshop in 1976. He worked as musical director at various theatres (including Theatre 25, the National Theatre of Miskolc, Budapest’s Várszínház, the Attila József Theatre and the National Theatre). In 1989 he re-established the Camerata Transsylvanica chamber orchestra and launched the Budapest Chamber Opera, followed by the Auris Company in 1995. From 2000 to 2002, he was artistic director of the Millenáris Park. Since 2002, he has headed the music department of the Academy of Drama and Film in Budapest. He has been artistic director of the Hungarian Opera of Cluj-Napoca (Kolozsvár) since 2004. His work has been rewarded with many professional and state honours, including the Liszt, Erkel and Artisjus Prizes, as well as the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Hungary in 2010.
This celebratory concert will feature works and extracts of works written by the composer in a variety of genres and at different creative periods.
