It’s unusual to perform two concertos in one evening, but then we’re accustomed to exciting pairings of works from the Dohnányi Orchestra Budafok under Gábor Hollerung. It’s also rare to encounter a concerto written for timpani, but this is just what the American Philip Glass, one of the world’s best-known and most popular composers, did in the year 2000 – producing a double concerto for not one but two timpani players. The two soloists must perform on no less than nine timpani with energetic, s...ometimes unbelievable – and physically taxing – skill. The American composer exploits the possibilities of the instrument in an unprecedented way, for example when the mallets are set aside and the two timpanists – here the outstanding Zsolt Nagy and Zoltán Rácz – are called upon to beat the drums with their bare hands. The other concerto to be heard at this concert was composed by László Dubrovay, the composer awarded the Kossuth Prize one week before his seventieth birthday in 2013. “For me, Ferenc Liszt is one of the most important composers. My third piano concerto, like his piano concertos in E-flat major and A major, follows the single-movement form he created,” recalled Dubrovay of the composition written to mark the bicentennial of Liszt’s birth. The work was premièred in 2011 by Balázs Fülei, who – despite his youth – is already a highly successful and active performer on the domestic music scene. The second half of the concert features Berlioz’s symphony first performed in 1830, which carries the subtitle of An Episode in the Life of an Artist. In each segment of the five-movement work, the music departs from its traditional role and assumes an almost visual power. Presented by: Palace of Arts
