Launched six years ago, the Budapest Mahler Festival has developed into one of the defining events associated with the global obsession with everything Mahler. This documentary film produced by Müpa Stúdió picks out the best productions over the past six years to explore the life and times of Gustav Mahler. Iván Fischer, the festival’s artistic director, presents this unique artistic legacy as a kind of spiritual tour guide. Of course, Mahler also had close ties to Hungary: From October 1888 to ...March 1891, he directed the Hungarian Royal Opera House in Budapest, a remarkable – and remarkably stormy – period that has gone down in the annals of Hungarian opera history as a golden age. It was not just as a conductor, but also as a composer, that Mahler's work was heavily influenced by his two and a half years in Budapest: The première of his first symphony was performed in the Pest Vigadó theatre, for example. The work did not attract great acclaim at the time, but has since become accepted as a central piece in the concert repertoire alongside Mahler's other symphonies. These works – as well as Mahler's songs – now take their rightful place in the upper echelons of classical musical tradition among those masterpieces that capture the unfathomable complexity of human emotions, philosophical quandries and musical challenges.
