Brahms composed his series of orchestral variations on a theme by Haydn during a summer holiday in 1873, a few years after an acquaintance had suggested a theme to the composer that is traceable to an ancient pilgrim’s song entitled the St. Anthony Chorale. The theme itself is the melody from the second movement of a piece composed for wind ensemble and attributed – probably erroneously – to Haydn, which Brahms adapted in eight variations scored for symphony orchestra. The work was a great succe...ss at its première and has remained one of Brahms’ most popular compositions ever since. The concert is an attempt to present the history of the pilgrim’s song and the masterpiece it inspired. Ages: 10–14 years Presented by: Palace of Arts
