Bartók

Concerto for Orchestra, Sz. 116, BB 123

Nearly a hundred years ago, Bartók wrote: “My true guiding ideal […]: the idea of the brotherhood of peoples, the idea of becoming brothers despite all wars and conflicts.” Despite his best efforts, he found fewer opportunities to collect folk songs in a diminished Hungary and experienced growing unrest around him. The Violin Rhapsody No. 1 evokes motifs from Transylvanian and Timiș County folk songs, while the Piano Concerto No. 2 reflects the influence of the neoclassicism then prevalent in Europe. The program concludes with one of the pinnacles of Bartók’s oeuvre, the Concerto for Orchestra. Composed in the United States, its universally resonant tones embrace the spirit of virtually the entire world. The concert will be headed up by the legendary German conductor Christoph Eschenbach, whom the orchestra welcomes as a returning guest.
The concert is presented as a collaboration between the MÁV Symphony Orchestra and Pilvax Films, as part of the All Star Series programme curated by Stathis Karapanos.
