As if his personality and life’s work had escaped all the evils of civilisation, the poetic world of Ferenc Buda can be compared to the purity of untainted nature. He lives and writes in Tiszakécske without attitude, anxiety or mannerism, far away from prize ceremonies or from an environment where career and success are sometimes more important than achievement itself. “For me, writing is an endless opportunity and practice for survival, but it is never a competition,” says Buda. “I don’t usuall...y feel any great inner compulsion to get ahead of others, so it doesn’t break my heart if others get ahead of me. Consequently, I have no adversaries to overcome. Only myself: again and again, I have to defeat the evil lurking within myself (as well). I’m happy when this sometimes succeeds, as it’s because of this evil – because of our greedy and stupid nature – that the Earth is an orphan; because of us, and thus with us, an orphan.” Buda’s verse, conceived under the spell of László Nagy’s poetic ideal, draws on the same source as his professional work as a literary translator adapting Turkish, Kirghiz, Kazakh, Bashkir, Udmurt, Mordvinic, Finnish and Sami folk poetry and fairytales in an effort to preserve for posterity the scarcely known cultures of small nations – notwithstanding the fact that the concept of a “pure source” has, for many, become hackneyed as a metaphor in the 21st century. We recommend this evening – to be crowned by a perfect accompaniment to this poetry in the shape of the beautiful voice of Ági Szalóki – to all those who still believe that faith in the power of poetry and personality, backed by a lifetime of experience, can sometimes be more important than any forced attempt at modernity. Our visitors are kindly informed that this performance will be presented in Hungarian. Presented by: Palace of Arts
