Formed in 1967, Tangerine Dream is a true cult band that has helped shape the musical tastes of two generations since the 1970s. More than pioneers in the genre of electronic music, the German formation can be regarded as a series of experiments in several waves and through countless reincarnations. In the early days in Berlin, the band took an approach to contemporary music from the perspective of both Karlheinz Stockhausen and Jimi Hendrix. Later they joined the ranks of the big synthesiser wizards, winning prestige with a deeper, intelligent form of electronic music.
Despite the dozens of musicians who have been members of the band at various stages, to many people Tangerine Dream is essentially synonymous with its founder Edgar Froese, the only continuous member from the very beginning, and it is his creative input above all which has won the admiration of many. This evening’s concert is something of a summary of the numerous styles the band has represented over the years, from their early experimental minimalist period to their more forceful trance-wave in the ’70s, through to the film scores in the ’80s which brought them their greatest international recognition (such as Identification of a Woman – 1982, director: M. Antonioni; Firestarter – 1984, director: Mark L. Lester; Legend – 1985, director: Ridley Scott; Shy People – 1987, director: A. Konchalovsky).
