If paparazzi had existed in the mid-19th century, they would have had Ferenc Liszt permanently in their sights. But only, of course, if they had been able to keep track of him. If we were to add up the total number of kilometres Liszt clocked up throughout Europe, his achievements would be impressive even with today’s transport options. The Liszt year is not only an opportunity to hear the great Hungarian composer’s music spread throughout the season in the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall, it is also a chance to admire Liszt as one of the most active travellers and most frequently photographed “celebrities” of his age. This is made possible by an interactive map of Liszt’s travels created in collaboration with the Moholy Nagy University of Art and Design, and The Many Faces of Liszt photo exhibition compiled from the archives of the Hungarian National Museum. That is not all, the Palace of Arts has many more surprises in store for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Ferenc Liszt – who declared himself to be Hungarian on hearing of the 1838 floods in Pest.
