Bryn Terfel is a leading figure on the international musical stage; to put it simply, he is one of the best baritones in the world. He was initially associated mainly with the music of Mozart, but has taken on an increasing number of roles in Wagner operas in recent years. The album Bad Boys appeared at the end of 2009 and was immediately elevated to the five-star category in the classical music press for its concept and musical execution. Although this band of cynical and wicked, scheming or simply cunning characters living in the shadow of opera’s bass clef are certainly not the sort we’d like to meet in a dark alleyway, we are in safe hands within the walls of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall. We’ll meet the all-denying Mephistopheles from Gounod’s Faust and again in an extract from Boito’s opera Mefistofele, then Scarpia from Tosca, Dr Dulcamara from L'elisir d'amour, the prison warden Pizarro from Beethoven’s Fidelio, the music master Don Basilio from Rossini’s The Barber of Seville and Caspar from Der Freischütz, not forgetting Don Giovanni or the satanic Iago from Verdi’s Otello. A master of operatic disguise, Terfel also brings other roles to life during this uniquely assembled performance, such as the smuggler and dope dealer from Porgy and Bess, the barber Sweeney Todd from Stephen Sondheim’s popular musical, or Mack the Knife from The Threepenny Opera. The evening presents a unique opportunity to hear the villains of the operatic repertoire together on one stage.
