The man who dreamt up the Mahler’s Cities concert series,
Christoph Eschenbach, is one of the most authentic Mahler
conductors of our time.
Gustav Mahler was born in Kaliste, Bohemia in 1860. He spent
his youth in Prague. From 1888 to 1891 he was conductor and
director of the Hungarian State Opera House and in 1889 he
premièred his Symphony No. 1 in Budapest. He then worked as
principal conductor of the Hamburg City Theatre until 1897. On the
150th anniversary of the composer-conductor’s birth, Christoph
Eschenbach conducts Mahler’s works in all three cities.
