Allan Sekula: Polonia and Other Fables
9 July – 19 September 2010
Ludwig Museum
The exhibition is realised thanks to the collaboration between the Warsaw Zachęta National Gallery of Art (Zachęta – Narodowa Galeria Sztuki) and The Renaissance Society, Chicago.
The world famous American creative artist Allan Sekula (Erie, Pennsylvania, 1951) became well known through his documentary photo and video art. His career began in the early seventies and he has long been preoccupied with exploiting the visual, and within it, the traditional modes of artistic depiction. Additionally Sekula has been a constant critic of the myths generated by capitalism and been preoccupied by the plight of the working man at the hands of global capital.
This exhibition presents his earlier and current work, but is in no sense a retrospective. His new series, Polonia and Other Fables, focuses on labour and the individual and social situations and approaches it involves. With it he examines and views the social effects of globalisation with a critical eye.
