On May 22nd, 2006 the most prestigious concert organ of Europe was inaugurated in the Béla Bartók National Music Hall amid spectacular celebrations. The aim of this site is to introduce the history of this instrument, the basic genres of organ literature, its most important composers and performers to the visitors. We wish that the data on this site would serve the better information of musicians as well.
92 stops, 5 manuals, 6804 pipes, a 10-month voicing period, all these figures characterize the new organ of the Béla Bartók National Concert Hall.
The dimensions for the arrangement of the new organ were given in the hall. A 12.5 meter wide and 13 meters high and in the middle 5 meters deep niche determined the architectural placement. The front of the organ consists of a wall-to-wall case on the front balcony and independent display pipes.
Regarding its structure the organ is the most complicated instrument, its operation, however, is rather simple. The pipe sounds when wind goes through it, but goes silent immediately when the wind is taken away. This process is repeated in several different variations while the audience experiences wonderful music.
